Lotus Notes 8.5.2 Warm Start - Up and running in 5 seconds

After upgrading to Lotus Notes 8.5.2 and changing the following values in C:\Lotus\Notes\framework\rcp\deploy\jvm.properties

vmarg.Xmx=-Xmx1024m
vmarg.Xms=-Xms512m

I get the following times:
  • 1 Second to see the Password Prompt
  • 5 Seconds to see my Workspace !!!
My machine is a Dell Latitude D820 running

  • Windows 7 32 Bits
  • 4 GB RAM Installed (3.25 usable).
  • HDD 80 GB 5400 RPM

Sorry about the resolution.. I don't have a fancy Mac or a nice recording tool. :)

  1. WOW....
    Thanks for the tip...

    I tweaked that in the past for Notes 8.0.2 but didn't think to try on this version.. even if it's a 10 hour old install... :-)

  2. Yep.. very quick.. However, single sign on seems to be disabled, as it always asks me to login.

  4. This sort of stuff should be exposed as a preferences option that users can easily configure. Perhaps with an ability to detect available RAM so as to not over-specify RAM. Simple yet can totally change
    the user experience.

    I work in a place where they use a range of 8.0.2 and 8.5.x and they all think Notes is a pile of steaming crap because it takes a couple of minutes to startup on the PC's/Laptops in the morning...

    They hate it so much so, for this and other reasons, that there is a very large amount of money allocated for a sharepoint migration....

    I see that this may make Notes snappier. Still slow if the disk is spinning for other reasons thoug. I guess testimony of the large number of files involved in loading Eclipse.

    I don't see the password prompt someone mentioned above. Perhaps he did not restart his PC after the install. The SSO service must be loaded again.

  6. Hi Luis,

    I made the changes to 8.5.2 and it does not appear to make any difference what so ever.

    I am using a Quad core CPU, running Window 7 64 Bit with 8 Gb of RAM.

  7. The biggest performance boost on 8.5.2 is when modifying the install, so that you are preloading Notes, upon OS boot. Let me see if I can dig up that info.

  8. OK, I found the IBM technote regarding speeding up Notes using the pre-loader. It can be read here:
    http://www-01.ibm.com/support/docview.wss?uid=swg21424193&myns=swglotus&mynp=OCSSKTWP&mync=E

    The nice part is, if you already have Notes 8.5.2 installed, you can enable this using a simple registry key.

    Also, on the topic of the JVM tweak, our standards that we are using, are increasing the value to half of the users RAM. So in the case of a 4GB machine, you could get away with using 2048 if you wish. But with 5seconds to get to your workspace, it obviously will not increase the loading speed, it will merely increase your speed within notes.
